Matted vs. Flush Mount
(album style comparison)

L
ucky for you, there are basically two styles of wedding albums that exist in the world, Matted and Flush Mount. One style is not better than the other; they differ mostly in how the photographs are mounted and displayed on the page. Both books can hold single or multiple images on each page, offering far more freedom in the design process. The most important factor in deciding between the two is your personal taste. Some clients prefer the nostalgia and simplicity of a Matted page, while others are drawn to the modern and clean style of the Flush Mount.

Matted books have a more formal, 'old school' feel. They feature photographs that sit recessed into the page and are surrounded on all sides by a thick matte paper, similar to a printed photograph in a matted frame. Matted books can display multiple photographs per page, and the mattes are hand-cut and laid over the photograph. The Flush Mount book has a more modern feel, with multiple images graphically designed onto a page, which is then permanently dry-mounted into the album. As a photographer, the traditional Matted album remains close to my heart, as it has a classic elegance and demonstrates meticulous attention to detail. The matte paper has a distinctive texture and weight, making the album both a visual and tactile keepsake. Matted albums often hold fewer images on each page which forces the viewer to slow down and appreciate each image individually.

Flush Mount books are graphically designed to showcase multiple images, similar to a magazine spread. There is no matte around the photographs; instead, the photographs ARE the actual pages. Flush Mount books don't limit you to 4x6 or 5x7. The photographs can span across the center seam and go right to the edge of the page. As a designer, I love the freedom and flexibility that Flush Mount books provide. You can also tie in design elements, such as text or a monogram, with the fonts or color schemes from your invitations and programs bringing all your wedding details together. Essentially, if it can be done in Adobe InDesign, it can be printed in your album. The final product has a modern feel created on long lasting, unbendable pages.
